Freelance 2023

“Freelance” struggles to establish itself as a movie, presenting a feeble plot and familiar faces without the substance needed for genuine engagement. Despite a substantial $40 million budget, the film feels like a rushed attempt to secure a spot on VOD and in theaters. Pierre Morel’s direction, once promising with works like “District 13” and “Taken,” now succumbs to uninspired action and a lack of cultural depth.

John Cena’s portrayal of Mason Pettits, a former special ops soldier, alongside journalist Claire Wellington (Brie), feels like a forced attempt at an action-comedy. The fictional country of Paldonia serves as a backdrop, but the film lacks any genuine substance—no romance, no comedy, and certainly no gripping action. Even the usually charismatic actors struggle to inject life into this lackluster production, leaving “Freelance” devoid of the sparks needed for an engaging cinematic experience.
