When even one of Adam Sandler’s Netflix-distributed Happy Madison projects is a dramatic vehicle with bare remnants of the comedian’s characteristic juvenile comedy, you know he’s in an exciting era of his career. Hustle also marks Adam Sandler’s second collaboration with director Jeremiah Zagar (his debut was an underappreciated gem about children navigating a toxic household and adopting some of the same traits, We the Animals), three years after he collaborated with the Safdie brothers on Uncut Gems, which yielded his best performance.

Now, Adam Sandler has always preferred serious one-offs with established filmmakers (his collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson on Punch Drunk Love is probably his second-best performance). Still, given that one of his upcoming projects appears to be a drama about an astronaut, it’s safe to say that these more challenging roles are becoming more common. Yes, Murder Mystery 2 is still in the works (God help us all), but it’s a thrill to see Adam Sandler embrace his strengths and put in the effort to flesh out exciting characters in more competent, gratifying acting turns.

Meanwhile, Will Fetters and Taylor Materne’s screenplay detracts from the work on screen. The latter’s writing experience is limited to narratives for NBA 2K games (probably Career Mode), which is understandable given the dialogue and situations’ amateurishness and stretched plausibility. Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of that assertion is that the script is already plagiarizing from several sports movie tropes, unable to master the classics. Even the crowd-pleasing ending is brutal to enthuse because the third act begins by circling the plot until it drags itself across the finish line.
