This film is a departure from his two previous science fiction films but retains the elements that make a Garland movie a Garland movie. Harper (Jessie Buckley) decides to rent a peaceful and tranquil retreat in the English countryside. She is introduced to the property by her owner and begins exploring the surrounding countryside. This leads her into a nightmare that she did not anticipate.
Men is a controversial movie. People seem to be unable to stand it. However, Men is my favorite Garland movie so far. He never fails to take risks with his storytelling and execution of his themes. Even though this film is simpler than his previous films, Annihilation’s cinematic skills are still evident.
Garland’s storytelling and allegory are what I love most about his work. The horrors of living in a man’s world are reflected in the direction, visuals, and atmosphere of Men. Alex Garland continues choosing strong female protagonists for his films. With a title such as Men, the audience can understand what Harper is up against.
